Club member Eugene Husband was the only competitor flying the flag for Great Britain last weekend as he flew out to Tenerife to take part in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Olympic distance triathlon.
With weeks of training in the rain and wind, Eugene thrived in the 21 degrees heat. A field of 220 triathletes lined up for the 1500 metre sea swim, 40k cycle and 10k run. The sea swim, which took place in the bay, proved no problem for Husband as he exited the water in a time of 25 minutes 03 seconds. The long run to transition gave him plenty of time to visualise a strong bike and with the roads closed to traffic and thousands of spectators lining the streets Husband took no prisoners as he stormed around the flat fast course in an impressive 1 hour 06 minutes 32 seconds. With 10k left to run, he put the hammer down and cruised to the finish line in 27th place overall and 7th in the veteran age category with a super time of 2 hours 12 minutes 37 seconds.
